Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics STEAM

Program Mission

The mission of VEG's STEAM Program implemented by OmniLearn, is to provide our students with the opportunity to get the best of both worlds. VEG's Phillips RBM Approach enables gifted learners to master the written and spoken word through the in-depth study of Latin, SAT vocabulary, essay writing and study skills. Simultaneously, our gifted learners become immersed in advanced studies of political science, history, linguistics, business, philosophy, psychology and world geography.

The STEAM curriculum integrates what students learn in the VEG program and conduct groundbreaking explorations and scientific discoveries utilizing innovative and sophisticated labs taught by scientists and professionals in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Together, our goal is to transform the students that are studying both of these academically rigorous programs, into well-rounded, academically astute and globally informed learners that are inspired to pursue a wide variety of interests and careers. Mentorship programs are also offered to help prepare students for academic competitions their areas of interest.

Program Description

The STEAM program is held at the VEG of Roslyn location on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 - 7:00 PM and at the VEG of Huntington on Mondays from 4:30 - 6:30 PM. Classes are divided into the following grade groupings:
Grades N-1, Grades 2-4 and Grades 5-8.
Sessions run for 6-10 weeks. The tuition for Grades N-4 is $140 per two hour class; grades 5-8 is $200 per two hour class.

Program Coordinator

Jane Powel, President/CEO of OMNiLEARN Corp. bridges the gap between lab bench and classroom for students and teachers around the country. Trained as a K-12 special education teacher, she immediately focused on alternative techniques in teaching, particularly for gifted students. This required a deep understanding of learning and memory which led her to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

She served as Education Manager of the DNA Learning Center under James D. Watson, Nobel Laureate, during the early days of the Human Genome Project. This unique opportunity afforded her access to molecular biologists (Carol Greider) working on telomerase (aging) using worms, and learning and memory using flies (Tim Tully). She incorporated their techniques, equipment, and results into curricula for camps and schools on Long Island, in NYC, and California.

Omnilearn is designated as a sole source vendor for the DOE in NYC. The company's techniques were cited as "the way to teach science" by Kathy Ordonez, CEO of Celera. Jane is certified by the NY Institute of Technology as an On-Line Academy Instructor for the New York State Teachers Centers. She contributes time and energy to the ALS organization in NYC and on LI.

She is also a member of NYAS (NY Academy of Sciences), AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science), ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development), NSTA (National Science Teachers Association), the Physics Club of NY, and has been honored in Who's Who of American Women since 2006.
